LOT. 324 USMD CONVALESCENT JACKET
The item is based on a hospital jacket produced in the U.S. in the 1940s. Hospital jackets were provided to soldiers recuperating in hospitals for use when going out. An article from the May 21, 1941 edition of The New York Times describes how the U.S. Forces designed uniforms for wounded soldiers and adopted MAROON as the color. MAROON, symbolizing cheerfulness, appears to have been chosen to uplift citizens' spirits during WWII, as well as for its laundering durability. After going through trials and errors in our efforts to recreate MAROON using natural dyeing, T.T ultimately settled on a slightly more violet shade of BURGANDY.
The item uses satin fabric with densely woven weft yarns. Pre-treated with mercerization to enhance color, the fabric achieves vivid and smooth appearance. NATURAL DYED BURGUNDY uses natural "akane (madder)" dye. Akane, one of the oldest dyes dating back to the Yayoi period, has been used to produce red yarns in Japan. T.T achieved a deeper red by adjusting the dye composition.
NATURAL DYED BEIGE is a natural dyeing made from bayberry (yamamomo) and persimmon tannin (kakishibu), both of which have been utilized as dyes and oriental medicines since old times. Passage of time adds depth to the color, as the tannin abundantly found in the dyes enhances the aged look.
MUD DYED BROWN is carefully dyed one by one using "mud dye" , the traditional dyeing technique of Amami Oshima Island. None of them look the same, as all of them are one of a kind.
